PhD
My thesis is an investigation into the reader’s response to the book as a physical object using empirical research to support my argument. I trace the publication history of 9 eighteenth century novels through to the twenty-first century, adopting a multi-disciplinary approach, drawing upon art, history, literature, philosophy, social science, technology and textual scholarship. In the course of my research I carried out considerable research into earlier periods that have had a major influence on the culture, which produced the novel. My external examiner was Professor Norman Holland foremost authority on Reader Response Theory.
MA (Lit) (Open)
Textual Scholarship, research methodologies, the long eighteenth century, modern critical theory. My dissertation was a study of the novels of Anne Radcliffe, involving an empirical analysis of readers’ responses to Gothic literature supported by an online questionnaire.
BA (Hons) Lit, Phil
A dual course in literature and philosophy in which equal weight was given to both subjects. Literary, philosophical and psychological texts were studied from the following periods: Ancient Greece, Medieval, Elizabethan; Jacobean; Restoration; eighteenth century; nineteenth century (French and Russian); and the early twentieth century.
