Beating Exam Anxiety

Before the Exam

  1. Organize a study schedule so you can see what and how you will get your work done. Study each subject every day. Little and often is the most effective way to learn.
  2. Eat properly, get sufficient sleep, exercise regularly.
  3. Review only the major concepts the night before. Avoid trying to learn volumes of new material and/or multitudes of small details.

During the Exam

  1. Focus your attention on what you do know rather than on what you don't know.
  2. Leave your notes and text at home. Don't study on the way to the exam hall.
  3. Do what you need to do before going into the exam hall. Talk to friends if that helps you relax. Alternately, sit on your own if other people's concerns are likely to rattle you.
  4. Approach the exam with confidence.
  5. Read over the entire exam and the instructions very carefully. Be sure you know what you are being asked to do, and how you are to do it
  6. Organize your time. How many questions are you to answer? How much is each question worth? How long is the exam? How much time do you have for each question?
  7. For each question, underline the key words which will direct your answer. Make notes in the margin using key words to help you later.
  8. Change positions to help you relax.
  9. If you go blank, skip the question and go on.
  10. Read through your work to be sure you have actually answered the questions asked.

After the Exam

  1. Avoid the post mortem. It’s too late to change anything. You gave it your best shot!
