Suggestions for Improving the Use of Your Time

  1. Study your most difficult subjects during peak performance time.
  2. Every now and then - maybe once a week - do something enjoyable during your peak performance time.
  3. Use free hours between classes for preview and review.
  4. Be sure to schedule some time in your schedule for recreation - both physical and mental. If you don't plan it, it won't happen.
  5. To avoid learning interference, schedule the study of unlike subjects consecutively. For example, it is better to follow the study of a language with study of a science than to study two languages one right after the other. If you must study two similar subjects on the same night, try to take a break in between.
  6. Research indicates that after 1 ½ to 2 hours of study most people get a reduced return for their spent energy. After this time, schedule at least a short break (a reward for yourself because you're doing well) and return to take up another subject or course.
  7. Allow longer periods in your schedule for term papers and projects the week you need to work on these.
  8. Be sure to plan your final exam review schedule at least 3 weeks ahead. Plan to spend time on intensive review several nights before the exam and to use the night before to go over concepts that are still fuzzy.
  9. Use periods when you are tired or when your situation is noisy for jobs that do not require much concentration or original organization.
