During a study on desert plants the scientist had 2 identical plots with annual wildflowers in both plots.

During a study on desert plants the scientist had 2 identical plots with annual wildflowers in both plots.  One plot was enclosed to keep out herbivores such as the kangaroo rat.  After 2 years 4 of the wildflower species disappeared and 1 species of wildflowers increase significantly.  The unprotected plot did not change. What would be the reasons for this?
