In July 2002, I assumed the position as the director of alumni and
development at John F. Kennedy Catholic High School, Warren, Ohio. My
job responsibilities include overseeing the St. Mary’s/John F. Kennedy
Alumni Association, planning and implementing fundraising and
development activities; creating a strategic marketing plan; serving as
the school’s spokesperson and liaison with the media; managing two
budgets; and implementing special events. This was a newly created
position. One of my biggest challenges with this position is developing
an active alumni association. There are currently more than 6,500
alumni. Much of my time has been spent on developing an active board of
directors for the alumni association and creating short-and long-term
goals for the organization. By working with the alumni, I have come in
contact with a diverse group of business professionals. I have learned a
great deal from the professionals I have been working with to revive the
alumni association. Having an active alumni association would not only
benefit the alumni but also the school’s development program.
The school does not have a structured development program. Most of the
people in the school think fundraising as a development program.
Fundraising is not development. A development program is much more
comprehensive. I spent a lot of time educating them on what a
development program is. I have been working diligently to coordinate
restricted and unrestricted giving program for the school. Cultivating
this program has taken a great deal of time and much more work needs to
be done. I found myself spending a considerable amount of time educating
the administration on the importance and benefits of having a
development program.
Additionally, I have been working on coordinating an unified appearance
for the school and created a strategic marketing plan to increase the
school’s enrollment. I have working with them to create a much more
professional and polished look. Through my enrollment marketing plan, I
identified that the schools needs to create an unified look, better
market themselves against their competition, implement a customer
service/total quality management program to better serve its customers,
and actively forge relationships with the feeder schools, parishes and
community organizations.
In addition to working full-time at John F. Kennedy High School, I also
work on a freelance basis for a couple of clients. Currently, I produce
a quarterly internal newsletter for CCL Container in Hermitage, PA. CCL
Container is the largest and fastest growing manufacturer of aluminum
aerosol containers in North America. Approximately 200 people are
employed in the office and plant at CCL Container’s Hermitage
facility.
In addition to my employment, I serve on the Board of Directors for Big
Brothers Big Sisters of Mahoning Valley. While serving in the capacity,
I assist with fundraising, special events and public relations. During
the past year, the agency and Board of Directors have gone through
numerous changes in the past year. Many of the board members are new to
the agency so a considerable amount of time has been spent on board
development. As a Board, we are currently going through a strategic
planning process to better define its mission and strategies; working
towards meeting compliance issues with Nationals; revising the board’s
by-laws; finding new ways to reduce the debit and raise money; exploring
new ways to expand the services; work through management issues; and
increase diversity within the agency and Board.
