Q2. Pure carbon dioxide may be prepared by treating limestone with
aqueous sulfuric acid in a reactor.
The limestone used in such a process contained calcium carbonate and
magnesium carbonate, and the remainder was inert, insoluble materials.
The acid used contained 10% H2SO4 by weight.
The output from the reactor went to a steam-heated separator where
carbon dioxide was removed, together with water vapor. The residue from
the process had the following composition: CaSO4, 7.41 %; MgSO4, 4.81 %;
H2SO4, 0.96%; inerts, 0.65%; CO2, 0.10%; and water, 86.07%.
Calculate the analysis of the limestone used.
What percentage of excess acid was used?
Calculate the weight and analysis of the CO2 product distilled from the
separator, per 1000 lb of limestone feed.
