Assume that Isaac Asimov’s figures are correct, and that 3.5 X 10 to the 14th power of the 3.0 X 10 to the 26th power carbon atoms in your body are radioactive. Calculate the fraction of carbon atoms that are radioactive carbon-14.

Natural sources of radiation account for 82 % of all public exposure while human-made sources account for 18%.

24a. A garden product called “Dolomite Lime” is composed of tiny chips of limestone that contain both calcium and magnesium carbonates. This product is “intended to help the gardener correct the pH of acid soils,” as it is “a valuable source of calcium and magnesium.”

a. Write the chemical formulas for magnesium carbonate and calcium carbonate. In what form is the calcium in this compound, calcium ion or calcium metal?

b. Write a chemical equation that shows why limestone “corrects” the pH of acid soils.

c. Will the addition of Dolomite Lime to soils cause the pH to rise or fall?

d. Plants such as rhododendrons, azaleas, and camellias should not be given dolomite lime. Name a possible reason why.
