Hydrogen selenide can be prepared by the reaction of aluminium selenide with water, the other product being solid aluminium hydroxide, Al(OH)3. At STP hydrogen selenide gas has a density of 3.61g litre –1.
Draw a diagram of how to prepare a jar of dry hydrogen selenide, from the reaction between aluminium selenide with water using only a selection of the following equipment and materials. You should assume that the equipment may be clamped in any position. Include a brief description of how the arrangement achieves the desired result.
Liquids Solids
Concentrated hydrochloric acid Calcium chloride granules
Concentrated nitric acid Sodium chloride
Water Aluminium selenide
Sodium hydroxide
Explanations are provided (with a pictorial representation of the setup)
