Propose a structure for each compound with the formula given below that
shows only one signal in the 1H NMR spectrum.

a) C5H12

b) C5H10

c) C4H8O2

Soln

Would structure a) be a propane (alkane) structure? Each H proton is
identical to each other so there would only be one proton peak.

I think structure b) would be a cyclopentane structure. There is no
coupling between the identical H neighbors. There should be on 10H
singlet.

I’m not too sure about structure c). The two oxygen molecules are
confusing. I did provide a plausible structure any way.
