Starting Materials: Enter the stockroom and click on the clipboard. Select the Esterification Reaction.
Choose the starting reagents: 2-phenylacetic acid and ethanol.
Return to the lab and build the experimental set up. Use a heater, condenser and N2 gas. Add the reagent, H2SO4.
You will monitor the reaction with TLC. Run a TLC sample before you start the reaction. Note the time on the laboratory clock. Start the reaction by turning on the stir plate. Advance the laboratory clock by 1 minute and take another TLC sample. Note the appearance of any product. Note the time. (Running a TLC sample takes 5 minutes of virtual time, so the clock should have advanced at least 5 minutes.) Take another TLC sample and look for the appearance of product. Repeat this step until you note the appearance of product on the TLC plate. Note the time and the size of the TLC spot. Continue to sample every 5 minutes. You may choose to sample at less frequent intervals if the reaction seems to be proceeding slowly by clicking on the laboratory clock to advance it. Always note the time on the clock before you take the TLC sample and remember that the clock will advance 5 minutes for every sample. Note the time that the reaction is complete. (The starting material will no longer be present in the reaction vessel as indicated on the TLC sample)
