Why was Judge Robert Bork unable to get a seat on the Supreme Court?

Why was Judge Robert Bork unable to get a seat on the SUPREME Court and why.  Was he railroaded or that the Senate did there job in keeping a BAD judge off the federal bench.  Also, in many states judges run with their party affiliation on the ballot so... can politics ever be removed from the scenario?
