In case of Smith v Jackson 2005, the city of Jackson granted salary increases to all officers of the police force in an attempt to bring their starting salaries up to average of the region. The effect of these salary increases was that those officers that have less than five year's experience got a proportion of salary increases that were higher than the salary increases of officers that were more than 40 years of age.
