The company's present strategy is to invest heavily in research and development and to partner even closer with its independent distributors to give them the tools to be more competitive. For example, over the past two years, the firm has invested heavily and created a cutting-edge waterborne basecoat system. PPG's waterborne was superior to that of most competitors and, as a result, they reaped the benefits when California and Canada enacted stricter VOC limits two years ago. Because the product is sold through independent distribution, PPG must be certain its partnering jobbers are more competitive at that level than competing DuPont, BASF, and Sikkens jobbers.
