A research study was conducted to determine how students develop online learning skills.
Questions were generated from online course designers, faculty and administrators. The questions selected were reviewed by other faculty members and administrators. The edited versions were used in the development of an online survey. A list of participants was generated from graduates who had a grade point average of at least 3.5 and had 80% or more of their classes online. A total of 93 students were invited to participate in the survey, of which 59 students did so. From the survey came a list of seven tips to be a successful online learner.

Online learning has fast become a popular choice among working adults. Due to the convenience and flexibility it offers, adult learners are able to continue their education while balancing a busy lifestyle. A study was conducted to identify key components of online success. Participates for the study came from graduates who earned degrees with at least 80% of their courses online. 59 students with grade point averages of 3.5 or higher answered questions in regards to what it takes to be a successful online learner. In the article, How Students Develop Online Learning Skills, it identifies 7 tips for helping online students succeed. Many of the strategies may also be applied to being successful at work, home or in other activities.
Time management, Discussion Participation, Applying Gained Knowledge, Asking Questions, Staying Motivated, Communicating and Making Connections are the 7 strategies identified in Ropers article. The study mentions that there is no magical formula for success during online courses. However, using the 7 strategies listed would give students optimum opportunity for success. With more adults seeking degree programs online, it is vital that they understanding what it will take to be successful.

Roper set out to speak with real online learners so they could answer questions in regards to strategies that lead to success. Open ended questions were asked allowing students to discuss in detail the most important characteristics needed to be successful. The data was collected
and the most common answers from online students were selected as the most important strategies that determine success in an online course.

(Roper 2007) Although the article lists strategies that may lead to success, the most important information is there is no sure way to guarantee success.
