a. Defining breast cancer.
Cancer is a corruption of the natural regulations of cell division. Breast cancer specifically results from a disregulation of cellular growth in the mammary tissue including: the cells lining the ducts that carry the milk, the lobules that produce the milk, fatty and connective tissue, blood vessels, and lymph vessels. There are several types of cancers that can occur include: ductal carcinoma in situ, lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS), invasive (infiltrating) ductal carcinoma (IDC), invasive (infiltrating) lobular carcinoma (ILC). inflammatory breast cancer (IBC). Breast cancers like other types of cancers progress from cells exhibiting uncontroled growth. These cells often proliferate numerous DNA errors that result in further disregulation of cell growth and the cellular properties that maintain extracellular matrix leading to invasion of neighboring tissues or metastasis of tumor cells from their site of origination to distant organs and tissues.
