The United States is the only developed country in the world where its citizens cannot vote directly for their leader (in this case, the president). Instead, voters vote for president, and their votes are transformed into electors as part of the Electoral College. It takes 270 electorate votes of the 538 possible electoral votes to become president. Four times in American history the winner of the presidential election did not receive the majority of the popular vote: 1824, 1876, 1888, and 2000.
