You can chose to write the essay in one of two ways. You could structure it according the stage of development or you could structure it according to the physical, cognitive and social development. Whichever you choose, the paper is fairly short, 2-3 pages, so you won't have the space to go in depth. A great APA resource is the OWL at Purdue University. http://owl.english.purdue.edu/ I use them often.
In physical development you should describe the following key concepts as they relate to the factors you choose: the concept of maturation, genotypes and phenotypes. Then you can describe what factors are thought to influence a person from the Nature perspective through maturation, genotypes and early experiences (Kagan, 1992, 2003), the Cellular Clock, Free Radical theory (Chandel & Budinger, 2007). Then the Nurture perspective which would include phenotypes, optimal experiences (Aldwin, Spiro & Park, 2006) and later experience theory (Schaie, 2007).
