Individual practice means upholding an individual's beliefs about what is correct and incorrect and these guide individuals in decision making both in and out of a group. Individual ethics are basic principles that an individual uses to make decisions and behave in both personal and professional settings. These ethics are instrumental in molding different dimensions of a person's life, helping them develop work ethics, and form professional and personal goals.

Ethics in group practice differs from individual ethics because these are important for group effectiveness and achievement. Group practice ethics include equal access to services, confidentiality, and the fiduciary relationship (a). Ethics in group practice also include informed consent, self-determination, and professional competence. Ethics in group practice are related to the point of view that social group workers bring to practice, are general, and are descriptive. For example, appropriate termination of members is an important ethical issue in group work. In addition, ethical standards for groups apply to a large number of social groups. Usually, ethics in group practice are drawn from ethical codes. For example, ethics for groups of social workers may be drawn from the National Association of Social Work. Usually, ethics in groups is related to the role of group workers and shows the values of the profession of social work and special features associated with group-based social work.
