This is a 1965 article which displays the ideals, ideas and trends of its times - it was an article written at the heart of the civil rights movement. Willower & Carr (1965) see the school as a social organization that runs on 'teacher culture'. The article analyzes the school in this manner, looking at its varied functions, manner of administration, organization and practice within through the use of studies in the sociology of education that characterize these. The article sees the classroom as a social system and proposes teacher behavior is based on psychological rather than sociological grounds. The groupings in the school, what these all imply in terms of behavior, administration and leadership are all explored.
