Literature reviews:
- to see what current trends are in your industry
- to see what new developments are being made in your area
- to see use as a stepping stone before your company partakes in new endeavors

Statistics:
- to see how your company is performing with respect to its competition
- to compare various items against published norms

Let me elaborate.

Imagine you are a firm the manufactures woman's clothing. This is a huge industry, with a lot of competition. Therefore, to be profitable, stay at the top of the innovation curve, attract new customers and retain old ones, it is critical for your firm to conduct research. A good deal of insight can be gained via secondary research in the form of literature reviews or statistics.

It would be critical for your organization to subscribe to different journals that deal with textiles, manufacturing, design and importing. This way, you can keep up with the latest news, the new trends..

For example, in a journal that deals with textiles, there might be a new article published which examines consumer's reactions to using bamboo as a material to manufacture clothing. This info is interesting for many reasons;
- maybe your company was unaware that bamboo was the new "trendy" cloth
OR
- maybe your company was already considering looking into bamboo
