Napoleon Bonaparte (born on August 15, 1760 and died on May 5, 1821), was a French military and political leader during the French Revolution. Many consider him to have been a military genius (perhaps one of the greatest commanders of all time) but this was not his only area of expertise. He was a skilled politician, who ultimately had great influence on civil law (see the Napoleonic Code), culture, art, scientific study, and religious expression. He is perhaps best remembered for his involvement in the so-called Napoleonic Wars, which were a series of wars led against France by a series of coalitions. He established hegemony over much of continental Europe in his desire to spread the ideas of the French Revolution.
Among other achievements, Napoleon instituted a number of important reforms. These include educational reform (higher education, to be exact), a tax code, road and sewer systems (improving living conditions of the people in terms of health and hygiene), established a central bank, negotiated a new relationship with the Catholic Church (which helped to reconcile much of the population to his regime), instituted the "Organic Articles" which regulated public worship in France, and became the President of the French Academy of Sciences. In addition, he instituted the Legion of Honor to reward (and encourage) civilian and military achievements.
