I. BACKGROUND:

FMC Aberdeen states within its plant philosophy and policies its interest in participative management, quality circles union management circles, work teams and quality of work life programs. These themes dictate the direction of the plant's job design, goal setting initiatives, performance appraisal system, pay structure and career development planning. In addition, keeping within a simple system structure, all processes are applied equitably among all employees within the organization.

The system of personnel management is based upon different criteria at the FMC Green River plant. Since the workforce is unionized, pay scales, evaluation standards, job descriptions, and career development are subject to union review and approval prior to company implementation. Since the union has been in place for a number of years, these processes are already well established within the plant's organizational structure.
