Managers should do everything they can to enhance job satisfaction because job satisfaction is said to improve employee productivity, creativity, and commitment to the organization, and reduce absenteeism. Herzberg did research in this area and developed a two dimensional theory that proposed hygiene factors and motivators. He claimed that hygiene factors could only reduce dissatisfaction but could not motivate, it was the motivators that create satisfaction. He focused on issues like achievement, recognition, the work itself, responsibility and advancement.
The manager is however constrained by company and administrative policy, supervision requirements, salary constraints, interpersonal relationships, working conditions, work, achievement, recognition, responsibility and advancement.
