Last month, Fortune declared Nike's CEO Mark Parker businessperson of the year (Lashinsky, 2015). The Nike organization is described as "matrixed" with not only sport endeavors divided into different divisions, as the case study suggests, but also geographies (the company operates in 190 countries (Lashinsky, 2015). Jones (2013) describes how Nike changed from internally directing show designs, with "the company's managers and designers...convinced they "knew best" what customers wanted" (p. 301) to an organization that is more effective through a company focused on finding out what customers want. Organizational change was required to improve human resources, technological capabilities and organizational capabilities. These changes allowed Nike to be more flexible and responsive to the market place, and to increase sales and profits.
Nike's founder, Phil Knight, changed the composition of the management team, initially bringing in "managers from outside the company to change the way decisions were made" (Jones, 2013, p. 302).
