Affirmative action refers to positive action to increase employment opportunities of certain groups, which may involve setting objective, deadlines, and well defines steps to ensure that the objectives are achieved. These are actions that take race, ethnicity, social class, gender, and physical disability into consideration. Usually the historically deprived ethnic groups, veterans, people with disabilities, and women. There are however states like California and Michigan that have made amendments to their constitution disallowing affirmative action. Essentially affirmative action is a term to identify policies or program that are designed to level the playing field for minorities in the pursuit of , admission to educational institutes, jobs and government contracts.
