Before you begin to answer the three questions given, the first thing you may want to do is state what the European Union is; after which you may look at how it seeks to help its member states and what are the advantages and disadvantages of being a member.

The European Union is a unique economic and political partnership between several democratic European countries. It was founded after the Second World War by a group of five men (namely Konrad Adenauer, Alcide De Gasperi, Winston Churchill, Robert Schuman, and Jean Monnet) who first created the European Steel and Coal Community in 1950 with an aim to unite European countries economically and politically in order to secure lasting peace. This unification drive continued into the 1990's when the body became known as the European Union (established under the Maastricht Treaty - 1993). Back then in 1952, the European union had six countries; however, today the union has 27 member states (as listed below) with as many as 498 million citizens.

Take note that, part of the European Union's mission especially in this the 21st century is to, "provide peace, prosperity and stability for its peoples; overcome the divisions on the continent; ensure that its people can live in safety; promote balanced economic and social development; meet the challenges of globalisation and preserve the diversity of the peoples of Europe; uphold the values that Europeans share, such as sustainable development and a sound environment, respect for human rights and the social market economy."
