There are three categories of barriers, according to Cross, that affect a student's success in college. These are termed situational, institutional, and dispositional barriers. The first barrier, situational, refers to one's situation in life, including one's finances and work obligations. A student's retention in college may be affected by this barrier if s/he is unable to pay for coursework, books, or school supplies. Equally, if a student has a work schedule that is constantly changing and that prohibits him/her from attending coursework, his/her ability to continue to matriculate in college will be negatively affected.
