As the word sounds, 'summary,' for summative means to look at the big picture and depth of where a student is and what they may have gleaned in a course or school year. There may be too much time lost, by the time a teacher discovers an area to refocus on, deficency or other problem. Therefore, formative is best to stay in touch with the day to day and week to week activities and accomplishments of students.
