In speaking of the prince's military duties, Machiavelli says, "being disarmed makes you despised." As a result, the text articulates some disadvantages associated with defenselessness.

For example, please note the emphasis on war as a necessity and major expectation of any ruler. In order to be an effective leader or ruler, war is a prerequisite. Accordingly, being defenseless not only makes one weak or vulnerable but also hated. Warrior-like leaders are more popular than peacemakers, according to the inferences here.

In addition, please note that the text aligns being defenseless with being common. For example if a private citizen is effective at war, he can become king. Therefore, the text shows that the results of being defenseless make one common, not noble.
