Without regard to the mission or cause all organizations and corporations function with a purpose. A nonprofit exists to promote a mission and a for-profit works to make a profit. Both must have or have the perception to service people but in the end both need to glean financial gain or they cannot continue to function. Even a nonprofit, which will get donations, still needs to make money to pay the bills. On the other hand, profits cannot go to individuals or stockholders.

The California Nurses Association/National Nurses United found that California not-for-profit hospitals are reaping huge tax benefits while providing minimal charity care.
