Health behaviors have the potential to improve or worsen the health of populations when they
are driven by cultural influences and trends. In the U.S. the top health issues facing the population are
a result of health behaviors. According to the CDC (2010) nearly half of all deaths in the U.S. can be
attributed to one of four health behaviors: Smoking, consuming alcohol, lack of exercise, and poor
nutrition. Throughout the U.S. many different health promotion campaigns attempt to change the
health behaviors and their negative influences on health, through education, screen, and prevention
programs. To measure the incidence of illness and poor health due to health behaviors, the CDC has
undertaken a survey to collect data on health behaviors and habits.
There are several reasons for collecting health data on a large scale. Data collected to measure
health behaviors can be used to measure the effectiveness of health education or intervention
programs. The CDC's telephone health behavior survey is designed for such a purpose. Health behavior
data can be collected to identify regions or parts of the country most in need of targeted health
