The first event which led to the surrender of the Confederate forces was the battle of Gettysburg (July, 1863). The South, lead by General Robert E. Lee met a larger, better equipped Northern army commanded by General George C. Meade. This would be the last time that Lee would be able to take offensive action as over 20,000 of his soldiers would be killed in the course of the battle.
