Florida has had pretty much the same experience with civil rights as the rest of the nation. In order to provide a general overview of the era of civil rights consider the following dates.
? In May 1957 the Supreme Court ruled in Brown vs. Board of Education that "separate but equal" was not in fact equal. This ruling made segregation in public schools unconstitutional.
? December 1, 1955 Rosa Parks was arrested and tried for disorderly conduct for refusing to give up her seat on a public bus to a white passenger. The ensuing court case led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott led by Martin Luther King Jr.
? November 1956 the state of Alabama strikes down segregation on buses.
? September 1957 nine black children are first denied entrance into the all white school they were enrolled in. The National Guard was ordered by the governor to refuse entry to the children. President Eisenhower then ordered the National Guard to protect the children and make sure that they were allowed entrance into the school.
? The Civil Rights Act of 1957 restores the right to vote for African Americans.
? August 1964 Martin Luther King Jr. gives his famous "I Have a Dream" speech in Washington D.C.
? Civil Rights Act of 1964 bars discrimination on grounds of race, color, religion or national origin.
? August 1965 the Voting Rights Act bars discrimination of any kind in the voting process.
