On the one hand, it has the potential to liberate human beings by freeing us from menial work, helping us to expand our perception of the world and to exploit resources. Through technology, for example, we have been able to gain a greater understanding of the natural world. Progress in molecular biology is inherently related to the development of new technologies that automate the processes and accelerate discovery. None of the current research would be possible without the polymerase chain reaction, a process made quick and easy by the development of automatic temperature cycling equipment.
