Unlike the behaviorists, Guthrie argued that reward or punishment was NOT necessary to change behavior. Instead, all that is required to change behavior is success in one of the following tenets:
1. Problem-solving - e.g. Like the feeling of elation after solving a problem
2. Task-oriented (helpful) behaviors -e.g. Like doing something that would prove to be useful, such as studying for an exam or eating nutritionally.
