IRB Guidelines prohibit coercion of participants, require that participants be fully informed of the risks and benefits of participating, restrict the groups with whom certain types of research can be conducted, require that participants be debriefed if the study is sensitive, and encourage researchers to recruit participant pools that are diverse ethically. IRBs restrict the types of research that can be done with certain populations, including those in prison, minors, pregnant women, and other typically marginalized groups. The requirements of IRBs vary from university to university- some universities have stricter requirements and review procedures that others. Requirements for certain types of research (e.g., medical drug research) are much stricter than requirements for other types of research (e.g., social sciences research).
