Earth's Dynamic Ocean and Atmosphere Worksheet
Explain in one to two sentences the role of the Sun and the oceans in weather, climate, and the water cycle.
The Sun The Oceans
Weather The sun provides daily temperature high and lows and controls convective processes, which dictates the presence of clouds. The sun also provides energy and heat to the earth in the form of shortwave radiation. How close a location is to the ocean can affect the amount of rainfall it gets. Areas close to oceans get more precipitation where as those closer to the centre of a landmass get significantly less.
Climate The average annual amount of the sun's rays that reach the earth's surface can influence seasonal temperatures. Plants are also an integral part of climate, which in turn can only thrive with very particular amounts of solar radiation Oceans have a large heat capacity and thus are warmer than land in the winter and cooler than land in the summer. This creates a moderating effect on the temperatures of areas located near an ocean mass or water body.
Water cycle The sun is important to the latent heat flux (evaporation) which is important for cloud formation and precipitation. This makes it an important energy force in exchanging moisture between bodies of water and land masses.
The ocean is ...
